Nanuet Pizza- Unique Crust

The other night, after hearing for a long time about how great it was from my in-laws, I finally got to try Nanuet Pizza, on Middletown Road in Nanuet NY.

Now, this place is definelty from another era...it's a hole in the wall, but I definetly like the vibe.
An old school community resturant for sure. It's refreshing to go to a place like this, and to have places like this still around.

Anyways, the pizza. I thought it was awesome! The cheese and the sauce...nothing special there. But the crust was very different...unique. It was pie-like, I want to say. Very thin, flaky, and buttery. Definetly worth a try if you're in the Nanuet area.

I'm told this pizza is locally famous, and there have even been requests from people all over the world who wanted it shipped to them or wanted franchise rights (though the owners turned them down).

Landscapers Can Blow Leaves Anywhere!

Recently, while driving down Sprain Road in Hartsdale, I came across an obstacle in the roadway? What was it, you may ask? A wall of blowing leaves. Seems landscapers were blowing leaves across the roadway, off the owners property and into an area across the street where they didn't have to worry about it. Now, maybe that's where they were piling the leaves for collection, but in many areas of the town, landscapers blow leaves into areas where they don't have to worry about collecting or piling them.....even right into the roadway...and leave them there. Many of these landscapers use several backpack blowers at once to accomplish this task, and often leave the roadway debris covered and cause traffic disruption while accomplishing this. I've even seen it go as far a landscapers blowing leaves out a backyard onto Grassy Sprain Road and leaving them there.

Anyway, here's a photo:
As you can see in the photo, the landscapers here blew the leaves so no one could use the road while doing it, onto the roadway across the street. This pile of leaves jetted out onto this busy roadway.

Why Do We Have Homeless Vetrans?

I was in Manhattan this evening.

Something came into my mind.

Why are there homeless vetrans in this country? How can we let those who have fought for the lifestyle and securities we have in this country go homeless and hungry on a street?

Now, I am aware that some is caused by mental illness, etc, but that's not always the case.
I find this disgusting that we let our nations vetrans suffer while we decide on how big of a plasma TV we should get, or how big or fast our cars can be.

Our VA's are rotting away, even with a whole new generation of vetrans coming out of Iraq.
Our vetrans should be cherished and well taken care of. There should be ample employment, food, shelter, and healthcare for each and every one of them....and not a single one should go forgotten.

This isn't only a responsibilty of us, this is a responsiblity of our politicians, many of whom nowadays haven't even seen time in the service.

The Journal News Steals MY Story Ideas!

Well, in two articles published in today's Journal News, they used MY ideas that I have published on this blog, written in letters to them and posted on the town blog, and even been quoted in the NY times about for stories. And I guess that email I sent suggesting this story idea and letting them know of the many issues that were touched on in the article, that I got a return receipt for, but no reply, was meaningless.

http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061124/NEWS02/611240360/1018/NEWS02

http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061124/NEWS02/611240358/1018/NEWS02

Very nice articles and well researched, but I wonder where the ideas came from? I should have at least been quoted or contacted! Hmmmmm.....at least Erin Duggan from the NY Times has journalistic integrity. And BTW Journal News, the NY Times wrote about this over a month ago. Where have you been?

This has been my cause for months, and I have been snubbed!

I'm Never Going To See A Fire!

So, last night my group was working, and I took the night off.
And what happens? Engine 170 goes to Fairview for a working fire.

I am a cursed white cloud. This has happened to me before, it seems whenever I take off, or am off or away, there is a fire.

I am aware that fires come in spurts, and I have 19 more years left on the job, but still it's quite annoying. I don't want anyone's property or lives to be in danger, nor am I wishing that.....I just would hope that when it does happen, it would coincide with my work schedule.

Very aggravated. Oh well though, I enjoyed my night off at least. And at least it wasn't a E170 or E169 first due fire.

We Have It Easy!

When I see things such as this, it makes me realize and appreciate how much easier my generation has it fighting fires. There's so many advances in technolgy and safety, and although some make our job tougher, for the most part, a lot make our job easier and more comfortable. No wonder some of the senior men are the way they are!

Boy, it must have sucked being the tillerman on Worcester Ladder 1 during a cold New England winter!!!

7-11 Coming To Central Ave?

Looks like a 7-11 is opening a new store on Central Ave. in Edgemont/Greenville (Town Of Greenburgh), on the corner of Mt. Joy Road and Central, next to the Hess station and opposite Curry Cheverolet. Where TD Waterhouse used to be.

First new 7-11 I've seen in forever open in this area. And, unlike the other conveinence marts on Central Ave in Hartsdale, maybe this one won't be so ghetto and will know how to actually order and keep in stock Nesquick Chocolate mil.

Telenav Navigation From Nextel On My Blackberry

Today, while in Western/Central Massachussets, I had the oppurtunity to try out one of the features I got my Blackberry for. The voice guided GPS navigation, "Telenav"

I was VERY impressed with the TeleNav! It's directions were quick, accurate, and clear. It's also nice to be able to look up and research addresses, as well as preplan routes and preload addy's.

This rivals the Magellan Roadmate GPS Navigation system that I was considering purchasing for my truck....but now I have one with me wherever I go!

I can't wait to try it out during my next Los Angeles photo hunt!

Music As A Weapon III

Last night, I atteneded the Music As A Weapon III tour at the Mullins Center at UMass-Amherst, MA.

I've attended both previous MAW tours, and as usual, Disturbed topped themselves again.

Mullins Center was awesome. Very clean, easy to use arena, parking was great, traffic was very light.

First up was Nonpoint. They were fun to hear live, especially after listening to their CD for a while. Great, hard band.
http://www.nonpoint.com/

Next up was Flyleaf. New to the scene, this band is led by 25 year old Lacey Mosley, who is 4' 5 inches and no more then 70 pounds. But the raging screams coming out from her lungs are amazing. Kinda poppish, but Flyleaf's songs have substance and an energetic passion in them. Think a very, very angry Avril Levine.
http://flyleafmusic.com

The band that took the stage next was Stone Sour. The lead vocalist from Stone Sour is Corey Taylor, also lead vocalist of Slipnot. I haven't listened to this band since their first album came out in 2003, and my interest in them is definetly renewed. Corey Taylor's vocals and songs are awesome.
http://www.stonesour.com/

And finally, Disturbed took the stage. What else can I say but AWESOME! Their set was amazing, featured some awesome lighting, sound, and pyrotechnic effects that went along with the music. They played for a good hour and a half, and did a really cool thing by blending several of their songs into one. As usual, David Draiman, the lead singer, was awesome and his promotion of his message of basically getting along, reminded my why this band is my favorite. All my favorite songs off their three albums were played, and I left deaf. The bass was INSANE. Awesome.
http://www.disturbed1.com/

All in all, a great night. I hope to catch them on their second leg of the tour, either in LA or NY, depending on where they play.

My New Blackberry!

So, I finally got a Blackberry. It's the 7100i model, and my carrier is Nextel (I'll save the horror story about trying to upgrade my phone from the i730 for another post)
I didn't get this phone to be tied to the internet even more then I am. I got it to be more organzied. I was sick of schlepping my PDA around, which I use for my schedule and tasks, so I decided this phone would be the perfect solution to merge two devices into one. I also like the fact that it has TeleNav GPS, and hope that will help me out on my photo hunts, especially when I'm in LA.
Hopefully, this will help me become more organzied, and lead to less stress.
So far, I really like it.

Shiela Knoesel

I am saddened to report that Shiela Knoesel passed away this morning after a short battle with Leukemia.

Shiela was an intergral member of the Ardsley community. She co-owned Ted's Texaco in Ardsley for many years. She is the wife of Ted Knoesel, 50+ year member of Ardsley FD and ex-chief. Also the mother to EMTBravo Member and Westchester County Police Officer TJ Knoesel, and Greenburgh Police Officer Kiera Knoesel. She also leaves behind numerous other children and grandchildren, as well as many, many friends.

Shiela was a good friend of my family, from my grandmother on down. She was one of the nicest people I have ever met, and have known her forever. I will miss her along with many.

My thoughts and prayers are with TJ, Ted and the entire Knoesel family during this sudden and tragic time. Rest in peace, Shiela.

Hartsdale Parking Garage A Complete Mess!

The Town, and it's supervisor, like to tout all his progressive and innovative ideas (I give him credit for some good ones), but when it comes down to the "bread and butter", everyday items, he and they could really care less.

Espceically when it comes to Hartsdale and Central Ave's retail economy.Take, for example, this sign posted in Hartsdale Liquors, in the Village.

The Hartsdale Parking Garage is an absolute disaster due to the ongoing renovation project. Not only are there dangerous conditions that exists for the workers, but for the pedestrians and users of the garage. The sporadic, unscheduled closings of the garage, and the filthy, unorganzied, poorly marked conditions of the area, have made it difficult to patronize the businesses in downtown Hartsdale...thankfully though I can at least most times walk in. Coupled with an aggressive parking authority and lack of parking before this project even started, this makes me think twice before patronizing the businesses in Hartsdale. After all, I don't want to come back to my car to find construction debris on it...again.

Anyways, I hope the new Morton William's that I mentioned previously isn't too expensive, and they don't end up going the same route as Gourmet Garage, which is yet another Central Ave. vacancy. A Wild Oats market would have been nice too. I know the Town Of Greenburgh had no control over this purchase, but I don't want people thinking that the town actually cares about attracting new and fun retail and resturants to Central Ave or anywhere else in Hartsdale.
11/12/2006 2:27 PM

And as has been proved by this past week's meeting, it's impossible to speak on these kinds of issues at the Town Board meetings. It seems that one issue always overtakes everything else.

Turco's store in Hartsdale sold to Morton Williams

Turco's store in Hartsdale sold to Morton Williams
(Original publication:Journal News November 10, 2006)

Upscale grocer Preston Turco has sold his eponymous market in Hartsdale to New York City-based Morton Williams, a family business that shares Turco's enthusiasm for fine food. Read more about this story now in our Business in the Burbs news blog at http://burbsbiz.lohudblogs.com/

I Guess Christmas Is On Its Way!

Well, I am the type of person who believes the Christmas season doesn't begin until after Thanksgiving. I get annoyed by seeing holiday commercials now, decorations up, and merchandise in the stores. It's too early for the Christmas season....it's only.......oh wow, it's the second week of November already! Yikes! Where does time go?

Anyways, I'm sitting at Hartsdale FD Station 1 last night, about 2300, preparing to settle in for the evening. All of a sudden, I see lights flashing and a State Trooper speed south down Central Ave. I look north on Central Ave, and I see what looks like a parade. The next thing you know, the ROCKEFELLER CENTER CHRISTMAS TREE is coming down Central Ave, with quite an entourage.

It was exciting to see this famous tradition making its way through the neighborhood where I work and live. It was about 20 feet tall on the trailer. From what I understand, it's been planned to be the 2006 Christmas tree for 9 years now, and hails from Ridgefield,CT.

Now, I am starting to get excited for the holidays, and can't wait to see this tree sitting in Rockefeller Center all dressed and lit up!!

My Letter About Being Denied Taking Photos

Hello-

Today, I met you while visiting your agency to take some photos of your fleet. Unfortunely, you denied me this oppurtunity, citing previous improper use of the photos by others and a comprehensive media policy.

Since riding with your agency as part of my Northeastern University Medic Class ride along program in January of 2004, I have been a huge fan of your agency. I am a career firefighter and paramedic, with a strong interest in apparatus photography, and speak highly of your agency to everyone.

The main reason for my wanting photos of your fleet today was to show off to the many visitors to my site (http://www.emtbravo.com) the diverse, well-kept fleet of vehicles you have. I am also fascinated by how prepared your agency is, and this also reflects with the fleet. I was exicted at the prosepct of getting the photos and being able to share this with my friends and visitors to my site. I feel your agency is one of the premier EMS providers in the nation, yet is not seen very often in photos.

I tried to do the right thing by asking your permission. I feel, and know, these vehicles are seen on the street quite frequently, and that I can obtain photos that way. I understand your concerns about using the photos inappropriately, yet I offered my name and where the photos would be posted and how they would be used.

I also understand your agency has a media policy. I would like to know how to go through the proper channels to obtain permission to photograph your fleet.

I know you are a very busy person, and I respect that and hope I'm not wasting my time. It just bothers me that my hobby of apparatus photography is sometimes unexplicably looked down on, and I can not understand the rationale behind this. Especially since anyone, anywhere....especially with the proliferation of camera phones, can get photos of your agency without even asking. I have photographed many agencies, most of them with permission of the director or similar title (including Los Angeles City Fire Department, Boston EMS, etc etc) and have never ran into an issue like this. Once I explained myself and my intent, all were happy that I had such an interest in their agencies. I watermark all photos so that there is tracking if the photo is "lifted". I also always provide a CD of all photos I take for however the agency I am shooting would like to use them. I, in no way, profit from this either. Thank you for your time both in this letter and in person today.

Have a good evening.
-Seth ********
http://www.emtbravo.com
EMTBravo@EMTBravo.com
P.S. I have attached a photo of one of your units that I shot on the street today. You may use it however you would like.

I Was Denied From Taking Photos Today!

Recently, I traveled with x901 to Newark, NJ, in search of photos of their awesome fleet. Being that I did my medic school ride time there several years back, I knew exactly where it was and that the staff is usually freindly and happy to show off their equipment. I have also been wanting to add their fleet to my collection, as well as show it off to those who aren't familiar with it.

When we arrived, I went inside to ask the on duty supervisor for permission, and he had no problem. However, since the agency director was there, we had to ask her first, and she immediately denied us taking photos, citing that there was a "10 step process" for approval, and that the UMDNJ logo has been used inappropriately on the internet before and they had a strict media policy. However, she acknowledged their fleet was very interesting, and said that we may take as many photos as we wished of units that were out on the street.

This is something that bothers me a great deal. I come in, ask for permission to shoot and explain how the photos willl be used, even offering my name and email address. I mean, these are public vehicles, and commonly seen on the street. Anyone, anywhere, can take a photo of them. I want to take some photos, and try to got through the right process, and am denied

. I am a huge fan of this agency, their staff, and their equipment. I do not undertand how the logic was fair. With all seriousness, I'm starting to see a trend of photography of my interests, such as fire apparatus, trains, planes, etc becoming a "no no", and it's doesn't seem right. A can't take a freakin photo of an ambulance because of a "media policy".

I WILL be writing a letter on this issue.

This is the first time I've run into this issue, and now it's my pet cause (one of many)

New York State Voting Procedures Are Ridiculous!

Today, I like many Americans who care about their country went and voted.

However, I had to drive across town, past three other polling places in my town, to vote. One of those polling places is right next door to where I live.

I don't understand the reasoning behind this? They want more people to get out and vote, yet they make it difficult to do so. I can't walk next door to vote, I have to drive two miles across town. What is the sense or logisitcs behind that?

Ugh!

White Helmets

I didn't know that white helmets came with this warning sticker.

I Paid $1.99/Gal For Gas!

While in NJ this past Saturday evening, on the way to Ikea, I stopped at the Exxon when you first get on to Route 4 after the GWB.

I was so excited, I haven't paid $1.99 for gas in a long time! AND, they even pump it for you!

New 145th Street Bridge

Myself and x901 caught the new 145th Street Bridge sitting on a barge, waiting to be installed, on the Harlem River by the Willis Ave Bridge recently. Pretty neat to see a bridge sitting like that, and interesting how it's "prefab". Guess it makes more sense to build it off site.

New Style Front Loaders For NYC Sanitation?

Caught this at the Queens Central Sanitation shops recently.

Looks to be a 2006 Freightliner Condor/New Way Mammoth

Is NYC switching away from the Mack MR chasis for the overhead dumpster loaders, or is this just a demo?

Looks pretty cool and modern, though I still feel a Mack is a better product for this application.

ASSCAT 3000

Last night, I went down to the city to see "Asscat 3000" at the Uprights Citizens Brigade Theatre.

http://www.ucbtheatre.com/ny/

It's a longform improv comedy show. They take a single word suggested by the audience, and have a guest tell a story based on that word. Then, the cast transforms that into several hilarious laugh out loud sketches.

The theatre is very small, and you are basically sitting right on the stage. Last night, the cast included several noteable comedians from TV shows such as the Daily Show and 30 Rock. And cast regular, Amy Poehler, from Saturday Night Live, was there too (and literally like a foot away from myself and Kristen). The cast changes week to week, and usually always includes cast members from SNL, the Daily Show, The Steven Colbert Report, 30 Rock, Conan O'Brien, etc. Since it's improv, the sketches are never the same and you never know what's going to happnen or whos going to be there.

The ticket price for the 7:30 pm show is only $8. And the 9:30 show.....free The UCB theatre is at 26th & 8th. (It's always every Sunday night, except for next week Nov 12th which is a special benefit show)

There are also different improv shows there seven nights a week, check out the link above for more details.

A really good time, I highly reccomend this to anyone looking for a fun night out.

Sheila Knoesel Blood Drive

This past Saturday, I was shocked to find out a longtime friend of mine and my family was diagnosed with Leukemia.

Sheila Knoesel is a longtime resident of Ardsley and is known to many in the community. Her husband, Ted, is famous in the community. He owned the Texaco station (the one by Sylvia Lane) and a busy towing business for many years, is currently the crossing guard at Concord Road school, and has been a member and ex-Chief of Ardsley Fire Department for over 50 years, best known now for his upkeep of Ardsley's 1928 Seagrave. Her son, T.J., is a County Police Officer and his wife Kiera is a Greenburgh Police Officer. And the rest of the family is extensive throughout this area and Brookfield, CT.

Sheila is a mother and grandmother, and is loved by many people. I hope those who can come out to give some blood will. The blood drive will be held at Ardsley's temporary firehouse on Saw Mill River Road (Route 9A) in Ardsley on Friday November 17th, from 4PM-8PM.

The flyer with further details can be found here

Just Saw Borat....

Just got back from seeing Borat, and I haven't laughed so hard at a movie in a long, long time.

It's very well done, albeit their are some explicit and gross scenes.

Very clever concept, and Sasha Cohen really pulled this off well.

A Sampling Of Eastchester FD's Apparatus

Yesterday, I had the oppurtunity to shoot much of EFD's fleet while in Eastchester getting spy shots of the new command cars. (As seen on http://www.emtbravo.com)/ Thanks to all who helped me get these shots, especially 121!

First up is Engine 27. 2000 American Lafrance, responds out of Eastchester FD Headquarters/Station 1

Next, here is Tower Ladder 17, a 2003 American Lafrance 93'. TL-17 responds from Station 5 on the North End.

This is Engine 28, EFD's spare engine. Mack CF-600. It's kept at the Tuckahoe firehouse.

Ladder 16 is a 2002 Seagrave Lo-Pro Quint and responds from the Tuckahoe Firehouse.

And here's the Tuckahoe firehouse, with the soon to be replaced Car 2102 in front.
Engine 31, 2002 American Lafrance Eagle, responds with TL-15 out of the North End station (#5)

Don't forget, photos of Eastchester's New Car 2101, 2102, and 2103 are posted on http://EMTBravo.com, along with a photo of the new Car 2105 (Mechanics Truck)

I hope to get back to Eastchester to get the rest of their very nice fleet soon.

Harold And Kumar 2 To Start Filming Soon!

A very stupid movie, but I still really got some laughs out of it. Can't wait for the sequel.

Production Weekly reports that the sequel to 2004's Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle is planned for a late January start date in Shreveport, Louisiana. John Cho and Kal Penn are set to reprise their roles as Harold and Kumar, respectively.
In Harold & Kumar 2, the cross-country adventure follows the pot-smoking duo as they try to outrun the authorities after being suspected as terrorists when they try to sneak a bong on board a flight to Amsterdam.

The screenplay is by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who wrote the first film's script and will co-direct the sequel.

I Missed Out On My Free Boo-rito

Yesterday (Halloween), I made my weekly trip into NYC to get my Chipotle fix. If I had dressed up as one of Chipotle's menu items, I could have gotten a free burrito. But I chickened out, fearing what people would think of me walking around Grand Central Terminal dressed as a burrito wrapped in aluminum foil. Surely, not everyones a Chiptole fan..those who are not haven't tried them yet.
But next year, after seeing this poster, I am without a doubt dressing up as a burrito. I may even invite one of you along to video/photograph the experience.

Deep Fried Coca Cola....Gross

I think in the south they'll deep fry anything. It seems most of these concotions get invented at the State Fairs. First the deep fried twinkie, and now this. Gross.
They'd like to fry the world a CokeState Fair treat becomes sensation far beyond Texas
12:00 AM CDT on Monday, October 16, 2006

By KATIE MENZER / The Dallas Morning News
I

mitation might be flattery, but Fried Coke is fattening anywhere you eat it.
That's what the nation has found out now that Texas' own cola confectionery has been released to the masses.

Fried Coke, which was introduced by concessionaire Abel Gonzales Jr. to the State Fair of Texas only weeks ago, already has been adopted by the North Carolina State Fair and the Arizona Exposition & State Fair. Both fairs opened Friday.
"

We've been getting calls from everywhere since we introduced it," said Elizabeth Martin, a spokeswoman for the North Carolina fair. "Everyone wants to know where they can get it."
Mr. Gonzales garnered national attention when he won the "most creative" title for his deep-fried Coke batter nuggets topped with cola syrup at the Big Tex Choice Awards Contest on Labor Day.

He appeared with his creation on NBC's Today show and in countless newspaper and television stories nationwide.

And that's how a North Carolina fair concessionaire got the idea, Ms. Martin said.
"He read about it and tinkered around with it to come up with his own recipe," she said.
Mr. Gonzales sold 16,000 cups of Fried Coke in the first two weeks of the fair and is poised to surpass his breakout hit at last year's fair – the Fried Peanut Butter, Jelly and Banana Sandwich. He sold 20,000 of those during the entire 2005 fair.
But while Mr. Gonzales has inspired others to fried greatness nationwide, he's been doing some tinkering of his own at home.

Just days after the State Fair opened Sept. 29, the carbo-crazed concessionaire decided to change his original Fried Coke formula.

He said he wanted to make the dough less cakey and more spongy to soak up the cola syrup. So he reworked the recipe, threw out the pre-made batter and retrained his employees.
Hence, the new Fried Coke. (Not to be confused with the New Coke.)
"They were good before, but they are even better now," Mr. Gonzales said. "I wanted it to be the best product out there."

Fairgoer Carol Boultinghouse tasted the new formula Thursday.
"It's good. It's got a little bit of Coke flavor to it, but it tastes like my mom's homemade doughnuts," the Dallas resident said. "This makes more sense to me than a Fried Twinkie. I don't know why."

But not everyone's effervesced over the flavor.

"This is Texas. Shouldn't it be Fried Dr Pepper?" asked Keller resident Jennifer Laboda.
Fred Tarpley, a retired English professor from Commerce, decided to take the middle ground.
"If you like doughnut holes with a Coke flavor, then you'll like it," he said. "It's something everyshould try once."
What's Being Done To Address Pedestrian Safety On West Hartsdale Ave?

Below is the content of a letter I sent to Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner and posted on his blog (http://www.pfeiner.blogspot.com) :

Supervisor-I would like to know what is being done to address pedestrian safety on West Hartsdale Avenue? There is no sidewalk, and this road is narrow, curvy, and especially dark at night. The sidewalk ends at North Washington Avenue, and from there it's the non existent shoulder.

There are several pedestrians that walk this route every day. It's ridculous that one cannot walk or safely ride a bike on this corridor that connects the Maplewood, Pinewood, and Poets Corners neighborhood to the core of Hartsdale. But maybe that's something with the Town that many of it's sidewalk systems dead end or don't connect anywhere where people actually intend to walk.

We should begin to lobby the state to install a sidewalk on this road, before someone is seriously injured or killed. I won't and can't walk or ride my bike to work because of this.

I know there has been sidewalk conterversy in the town before, but this compltely unrelated. This a major state owned throughfare and in should no way even be the source of political heat or issues. Thank you for your time.

Bob Barker Of 'Price Is Right' To Retire

Yesterday, CBS announced that Bob Barker, host of 'The Price Is Right', will retire in June of 2007 after 50 years on TV, 35 of which as host of the show. He will be 83 years old when he retires.

This is definetly an old school show that I'm so suprised is still on the air today. He, and his show, is a TV icon. I remember watching him as a kid, and when I was home sick from school. All the classic games and prizes and the vibe of the show really take you back to TV's yesteryears.

According to CBS, they are looking for Bob's replacment.....the new host will have to know the details of over 80 different games.
I wonder if they plan a renovation/update of the set? And I wonder if anyone will watch without Bob?
